A Seasonal Guide: How Often Should You Water Your Lawn?
How Frequently Should a Lawn Be Watered?
Grass, like any other plant, requires consistent care, including a watering schedule best suited for the type of grass. In lawn maintenance, the typical rule of thumb is to water your lawn for twenty to thirty minutes to achieve the one-inch of water per week rule. The frequency that a lawn truly needs to be watered depends on a few additional factors, including the following:
- Type of Soil: The type of soil your lawn has will vary greatly in how much water it will need. Sandy soil is known for its drainage, so your watering schedule would need to increase to about three times per week. Clay soil, however, is known for how well it retains water, so it's safer to water less frequently, about once per week, to avoid overwatering and drowning your lawn. Lastly, loamy soil is the ideal mix of drainage and water retention, so a sweet spot of watering twice per week is recommended.
- Warm vs. Cold Season Grass: As the names suggest, warm-season grass thrive in warmer climates, which requires only one or two inches of water per week. Cold-season grass on the other hand needs more water, around three times per week, during the warmer months as they don't pull in as much moisture.
- New or Established: Is your lawn well-established and is just in need of extra assistance, or have you had new sod installed? For new sod and grass seeds, it's important to water more frequently to ensure that the grass can take root. For new sod, it's recommended to water twice a day, while new grass seed should be watered two to three times per day in short intervals.
Additional notes to keep in mind when determining your lawn's watering schedule is how much shade portions of your lawn receives, as this allows moisture to linger a bit longer. For areas that do receive significant shade, it's important to keep an eye out for overwatering, as it can lead to fungal growth and create dead patches of grass. If shade is nearly non-existent for your lawn, it may be helpful to consider irrigation systems or hiring lawn maintenance to ensure your lawn remains vibrant and lively.
